ABOUT
Artist's Statement
"The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:5 (NIV)
This Bible verse inspired my work contrasting black clay with lustres. I work with smooth black clay and zinc free clear glaze to mimic the polished surface of lacquer and I mimic the Japanese gold working of maki-e with dots of gold lustre.

On my carved pieces I use multiple lustres to mimic the colours of flames. I am striving towards iridescent lustreware like an oil slick or heat-treated metal. I am inspired by Australian lustre artist Greg Daly. He wrote "lustre is a real adventure! Complete with highs and lows filled with excitement, challenges, mysteries, alchemy, discoveries and dazzling results."

My current carved designs are inspired by Islamic art, but my next series will be inspired by rose windows. I am striving towards the bowl forms of Lucie Rie, but I appreciate that this will take time and practise.
